I used Gmail for a number of years, but I stopped in early 2008. Why? Because I don't like the monopoly that Google has, and in my own little way I guess I just want use them as little as possible.

Since then I've either run my own email server with IMAP support (which, in combination with Outlook or Thunderbird, is great), or used a paid webmail service supplied by my DNS provider.

TBH I see no difference between how you describe the use of filters and labels in Gmail to the use of folders and rules in Thunderbird... they are one and the same with different names.

Thanks for the comment! The search function was definitely the switching point for me. I couldn't imagine switching back.

Agree with you completely. We've been using Google Hosted Apps for two years now, and the amazing search functionality is what I like most. In seconds, it can search the ~2Gb of archived emails and give me the best results.

It also ties in well with Google Calendar and the other suite of products Google has.
